Zimbabwe officials deflate government car tyres in hope of cheap deal

Letting down an enemy’s tyres is an internationally recognised form of revenge but deflating your own is offering huge returns to Zimbabwe’s political elite, the country’s president has revealed.

President Mnangagwa described how senior officials have taken to sabotaging their state-funded vehicles to keep them off the road until they are offered the chance to buy the otherwise pristine cars at trade price.

“My senior officers given government vehicles park them and deflate the tyres, and use the pool car to wait for time to expire so that they can acquire the vehicle quite new,” Mnangagwa told an annual conference of the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe, pausing as the audience laughed at the scam.
