Worrying symptoms of silent killer that affects one in five and can’t be treated

High levels Lp(a), a largely genetic form of cholesterol, can lead to heart attacks and strokes and currently because it is genetic, rather than lifestyle based – there is no treatment

Researchers have warned about a silent killer disease that impacts one in five people globally and for which there is currently no cure.

High levels of Lipoprotein(a), known as Lp(a), a largely genetic form of cholesterol, can lead to heart attacks and strokes and currently because it is genetic, rather than lifestyle based – there is no treatment. With no approved treatment currently on the market, Lp(a) plays a part in millions of deaths every year.

Lp(a) is similar to LDL cholesterol, sometimes called ‘bad cholesterol’, but is more sticky, increasing the risk of blockages and blood clots in arteries. But drugs like statins, that lower LDL cholesterol, don’t work on Lp(a). And because it’s genetic you can’t control it as easily through diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes.

Doctors have known about Lp(a) for nearly 60 years but there still aren’t any treatments on the market to lower levels of this risky cholesterol and reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes for patients. However now one team of researchers think they may be close to coming up with a treatment.
