World Cup live updates as Messi sends message and Southgate praised by ex-boss

UPDATES: If the 2022 World Cup is to be Lionel Messi’s last dance on the world stage, then the legendary Argentine is determined to go out with a bang and looks in ominous mood

Cristiano Ronaldo might be making waves for his interview with Piers Morgan, but Lionel Messi has no intention of being upstaged in his final World Cup.

The Argentina superstar landed continental glory with the Albiceleste as they won the Copa America last year and now is determined to lead Lionel Scaloni’s side to glory in Qatar. Winning their World Cup warm-up clash against UAE on Tuesday night was the perfect way to start.

England don’t have any warm-up matches, but things are hotting up at their training base – literally – as they prepare to meet Iran in their opening game on Monday.

Gareth Southgate’s side were left a little shocked by the heat on Wednesday as they trained for the first time. On Thursday they will do so again at the Al Wakrah Sports Complex, with the coaching staff mirroring training times to Monday’s 1pm kickoff.
