 England hero Sue Smith 'cannot wait' for the Women's World Cup to start but doubts the Lionesses will end the United States' dominance by bringing home the trophy. The USA will attempt to win their third successive World Cup when the tournament – hosted by Australia and New Zealand – begins on Thursday. The United States have been the dominant force in women's football since the first official World Cup took place in 1991, winning four of the eight editions. The likes of Spain, Germany, France and European champions England are hoping to end USA's World Cup stranglehold but Smith believes the Americans will prove too strong. Under Sarina Wiegman, England won Euro 2022 on home soil last summer to lift their first major women's trophy. Smith 'hopes' more silverware is just around the corner for the Lionesses but admits she expects the USA to reign supreme once again. 'I can't wait for the World Cup to kick off and England's success at the Euros just adds extra excitement,' Smith told Metro.co.uk. 'Straightaway we all think that because England won the Euros, that they can go on and win the World Cup. 'The extra boost of the crowd and just how women's football has gone up a notch from that Euros success means I absolutely can't wait. 'They [USA] won it in 2015 and in 2019, and if they get a third successive win, it would be absolutely unbelievable. They're just so consistent, they set the standards so high, and they've always got formidable squads. 'They go into tournaments thinking that anything other than a win is failure.
