After a shock final round of group games which saw some of the biggest teams in the world knocked out of the competition, we are now at the first knockout stages
The knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup have now kicked off, with Spain making it as the very first team through to the quarter finals.
Spain thrashed Switzerland 5-1 to be the first team to book their place in the quarters next week.
Goals from Bonmarti, Redondo, Codina and Hermoso made sure Spain secured their place after a shaky final group game against Japan. Switzerland’s one goal was an own goal from Codina who made a very poor backpass to Coll Lluch – that came from the halfway line.
The second and final match of the day at 9am BST is Japan vs Norway, where it is expected Japan to go through.
