Woman’s remains pulled from lake after being ‘dismembered by stranger on walk’

Mariame Sylla, 59, had gone for a walk on July 29 and, allegedly, met a gruesome fate at the hands of 33-year-old Harold Landon III. Her dismembered torso was found in a nearby pond shortly thereafter, alongside additional remains uncovered in a Clinton, Maryland apartment complex. It took police over a month to identify the scattered remains. Authorities have not discovered a motive behind the brutal killing but revealed that Sylla and Landon were strangers to each other living in the same neighborhood. The suspected killer had already been in custody for violating a restraining order against his former girlfriend when he became the focus of Prince George’s County Police in Maryland. Investigators retraced Mariame’s steps on the night she vanished, starting with her last known sighting. During Landon’s court appearance on Wednesday, a judge said: “This is a case of horrific facts”. Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said: “Mr. Landon has a history of abusing women. In 2019, he had a previous conviction for assaulting a woman in North Carolina. And in that case, there were allegations of strangulation.” Malik Aziz, Prince George’s County Police Chief, said in a statement: “Her murder is tragic. We hope the arrest of Landon provides some comfort to her family and all who knew and loved her. “I thank the women and men of our Homicide Unit, the Greenbelt Police Department, and all of our partner agencies for their relentless effort to find Ms. Sylla’s murderer and hold him accountable.” The Dora Kennedy School teacher was known for her warm spirit, Principal James Spence said. Students remembered her as someone who always spoke sincerely from the heart when welcoming them. Her funeral took place on September 8 at the Diyanet Center of America Mosque in Lanham, where a large gathering of family, friends, students, police, and diplomats from her native Ivory Coast paid their respects.
