Woman refuses to swap Christmas shifts with colleague

A woman has defended her decision to not swap Christmas shifts with a colleague who wanted it off to spend time with her kids, despite not celebrating the festive period herself

For many people around the world, Christmas is a time you get off to spend with your family, but not everyone is as lucky. One woman, who had just started a new job, landed in hot water with a colleague when she refused to swap annual leave with her so she could have the festive period off with her children.

The 25-year-old had just passed her three-month probation in her job, which meant she would be given the first Christmas off. While she wasn’t too bothered about having it off, because she doesn’t celebrate, but didn’t think her deciding to live a “child-free life” was enough reason for her to have to swap it.

When her colleague, who is a mum, asked her if she would swap annual leave days so she could spend Christmas with her kids, she told her “no”. Later, when the unnamed woman, who is believed to be working in the UK, shared the story with her sister, she was branded “selfish” for refusing to swap, and reached out to an online forum for advice.

Taking to Reddit, she explained: “I (25F) am not sure if it’s relevant but I’ve chosen a child-free life. About three months ago I got I started a new job and have just passed my probation period and now my bosses are sorting out my annual leave with me. This boss said there’s one gap left for annual leave on Christmas and they’ve been saving it for me. According to him any new employees once they’ve passed the probation period will get the first Christmas off. Here’s the thing I don’t care if I work Christmas or not and I’ll be on my own this Christmas as I don’t celebrate it.
