A woman was in critical condition after being bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming at one of New York’s most popular beaches.
The attack was reported at 5.49pm in the waters off Rockaway Beach in Queens on Monday, according to the New York Police Department.
The woman remained in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital Medical Centre late on Monday night, Michael Hinck, a spokesman for the hospital, said. The city’s department of parks and recreation said that the victim was a 50-year-old swimmer bitten on her left leg.
Lifeguards cleared the beach after the attack and a police helicopter searched the waters unsuccessfully for the shark. The opening of the beach will be delayed today as the authorities continue to monitor the
