Why Donald Trump is not appearing at tonight’s Republican debate

With the former-President facing accusations of cowardice but also boasting about ‘legendary’ poll, many have been left wondering why Trump isn’t going to take the chance to strut his stuff

The current front-runner in the US Republican Party primaries Donald Trump has said he will not appear in the coming televised debate with his rivals.

In his signature, slightly unhinged style, Trump wrote on his own social media channel: “New CBS poll, just out, has me leading the field by ‘legendary’ numbers… I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES.”

The debate, which was meant to be the first time the Republican rivals faced off, will be hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee on Wednesday. Already his rivals have slammed the decision to not show up – a super PAC supporting rival Ron DeSantis released an ad in which the narrator says: “We can’t afford a nominee who is too weak to debate.”

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, one of the few candidates willing to directly take on Trump, has been accusing the former president of lacking “the guts to show up” and calling him “a coward” if he doesn’t. But for a man who rarely turns down an opportunity to self promote, many were left wondering why he’d turn down the chance to insult his GOP rivals while opening himself up to criticism.
