United did not enter the transfer window planning to sign a goalkeeper but the departure of David De Gea in early July forced the club's hand. It meant United had not laid the groundwork over a deal to sign Onana, and they condensed talks into a three-week period earlier this month to get a transfer over the line. But things could have turned out very differently for Onana had De Gea signed a new deal at Old Trafford. That's because Chelsea and Tottenham were both keen on signing the former Ajax ace, and made inquiries at the end of last season. Tottenham have asked for information, Chelsea have had a very strong interest. 'There were meetings in London and Chelsea also met with Inter, but ten Hag was key.'
