Who’s on the new Team Trump?

With the former president confirming he’s looking to return to the White House in 2024, we look at the key players who will be by his side

Where else but Mar-a-Lago, his “winter White House” on Palm Beach, could Donald Trump announce his 2024 presidential campaign? On Tuesday night, he entered the stage to cheers from the faithful, promising that “America’s comeback starts right now”.

Perhaps a touch less emphatic before, but the Trumpian bombast was still there. Over the course of an hour, Trump reminded his faithful how things have slid downhill (he also promised to plant the American flag on Mars during a second term). Donald now plans to “fight like no one has fought before” to regain the most powerful position on earth.

His bid comes at a bad time for the Republican party; the announcement was made just hours after the defeat of Kari Lake, the candidate Trump had backed in Arizona. Hers is now one of a rising number of his failed midterm picks, with the anticipated Republican “red wave” underperforming to such a degree that it saw two of his key advisers push him to delay his presidential announcement. The other voices on his team ultimately won out. But who are they?

“It hasn’t been a joyride for our great First Lady,” Trump told the crowd at Mar-a-Lago. “I go home and she says ‘You look angry and upset’ and I say ‘Just leave me alone’… it hasn’t been the easiest thing but… people love her.” Melania is one of few family members to remain in the picture, accompanying the presidential hopeful to the event in what appeared to be a clear backing of his bid. It’s a different story for Ivanka, who this week announced that she would no longer be involved in politics. “I’m opting to prioritise my young family,” she said.
