WhatsApp rolls out important feature that adds fresh layer of security for users

WhatsApps’ two billion users could soon be better protected with its new security feature which aims to stop criminals being able to move their accounts to a new device

Popular messaging service WhatsApp could soon be even safer for its two billion users across the world as it begins to trial a new security feature.

Unlike many apps and websites this isn’t a two-step verification system which makes users confirm their identity through sending a code through email or text message, but the feature will stop people being able to move your account to a different phone, which is a way criminals can hack into user’s details.

The new feature hasn’t been officially rolled out to users yet, but is being trialled by some Beta users – a select group who test the features before they go out to everyone – so it is not yet clear how WhatsApp intends it to be used by the majority of downloaders. On Tuesday, WhatsApp announced users will soon be able to see everything that’s on your smartphone or laptop screen.

The major ‘Screen Share’ update is aimed at letting users show friends snippets from websites they are browsing, documents they are working on or how to access features on a device. It’s basically a functionality that many video apps such as Zoom and Google Meet already offer. As soon as the update is pushed out in the coming weeks, users will see a ‘Share’ icon in the app. Once pressed, they will then get the option to share a specific application or their entire screen.
