What to read this summer — booksellers tell us what they are recommending

Nothing to read on the beach? Baffled and bewildered every time you walk into a bookshop by the sheer number of books on display? Worry not, we’re here to help. We’ve asked 20 booksellers, from up and down the country, to tell us about three titles – one brand new, one old favourite and one non-fiction – they are recommending to their customers. Indie bookshops are experts in matching book to customer, so we’re confident they have suggested something you will love. So prepare for tales of doomed love, feelgood friendship, depressed Transylvanian aristos, cross-dressing pirates and Hollywood actresses on the run. Enjoy.

In the comments below, tell your fellow readers about your favourite sunlounger-friendly books or tell us about the best recommendations you have
