Libby Squire was a 21-year-old student from High Wycombe, Bucks. She was born on New Year’s Day in 1998 to parents Lisa and Russ Squire. Prior to her passing, Libby was studying philosophy at the University of Hull. When did Libby Squire go missing? In 2019, 21-year-old Libby Squire vanished after a night out. On January 31, she met pals for drinks before heading to a club where she was refused entry for being too drunk. Libby was seen taking a taxi from the nightclub. A huge search for the student took place before being scaled down on February 16, 2019, however, detectives continued to examine new clues. More than 70 cops had been searching for the University of Hull philosophy student. Libby’s body was later discovered on March 20, 2019 by the crew of a passing boat, in the Humber Estuary. What happened on the night Libby went missing? Libby was reported missing after leaving the Welly club in Hull around 11pm on Thursday, January 31, and getting into a taxi. The student did not actually enter the club as she was “turned away by door staff who thought she was too drunk”. Her friends put her in a taxi, which dropped Libby off close to her home but she “walked away from the safety of her front door” and towards Beverley Road. She was later seen by passers-by “obviously drunk” and “sobbing” – including two men who spotted the student lying in the snow at the side of the road. Jurors heard the bystanders tried to help her but were unable to understand what she was saying and she became verbally aggressive so they drove away. A group of students who heard Libby crying outside their house let her in but she left, saying she wanted to go home, it was said. The last person to see Libby alive told jurors she was screaming either to a “movement in the shadows” or a car close to where she was sitting on the ground. Unbeknown to Libby, Pawel Relowicz, then 26, was prowling the streets looking for a victim when he came across the “extremely vulnerable” student. Libby begged Relowicz to take her to her mum, but instead, he hauled her into his silver Vauxhall Astra and drove her to the secluded playing field where frantic screams were later heard. Relowicz then left the playing field around seven-and-a-half minutes later without Libby. Prosecutor Richard Wright QC said this was “more than enough time” for him to have “taken or pursued Libby out into the playing fields, sexually attacked and killed her, put her body into the river, and then run back to his car.” A post mortem could not establish a cause of death but DNA matching Relowicz was found on her, it was said. Libby’s funeral took place on October 3, 2019, at St Lawrence’s Church in West Wycombe at 1pm with hundreds of people gathering to pay their last respects to her. Who is Pawl Relowicz? At the time of Libby’s tragic killing, Pawel Relowicz was a butcher who had moved to the UK from Poland. He was also married to Jagoda Relowicz – the mother of his two children. 2 Relowicz was caged for life with a minimum of 27 years Credit: PA Relowicz grew up in Warszewice, a small village between Warsaw and Gdansk in northern Poland with a population of little over 600, before he moved to the UK in 2012, aged just 18 years. After leaving Poland, he set up a life with his wife and got a job as a butcher in Hull to support her and his two young children. Neighbours and colleagues only saw him as a hard-grafting factory worker, a family man and someone who enjoyed the gym. But before the brutal murder, Relowicz was already known to lurk in the shadows and perform perverted sex acts on himself just metres from young students in Hull. He would also violate people’s homes and steal intimate items – including underwear and sex toys. In 2021, his devastated wife dumped him after his arrest, before moving back to Poland with her children. That same year, Relowicz was found guilty of raping and murdering 21-year-old Libby at Sheffield Crown Court. Relowicz was caged for life with a minimum of 27 years. He was handed an 18-year sentence for rape to run concurrently.
