 London's ULEZ is one of the most well-known clean air zone schemes in the United Kingdom, putting a charge on non-compliant cars in a bid to improve air quality and tackle emissions. It initially included parts of Central London, but later this year it will expand across all boroughs and operate for 24 hours a day. The scheme isn't necessarily popular with a lot of people, but some have argued for the environmental benefits – if projected figures and the Year One Report prove accurate. But, as basic at it might seem, what does the ULEZ acronym stand for? Let us explain… What does ULEZ actually mean? The ULEZ acronym is pretty straightforward and simply stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. ULEZ isn't the only one in operation, as there are also Low Emission Zones (LEZ). The LEZ applies mainly to larger diesel-powered vehicles over a certain weight – this includes lorries over 3.5 tons, coaches over five tons, or a large van, minibus or motorised caravan that was registered prior to 2006. Some lighter 4x4s and trucks registered as new before January 1, 2002 are also covered under LEZ. There are also Clear Air Zones (CAZ) which are designed to encourage road users to opt for vehicles that meet a standard of emissions. There are Clear Air Zones in operation in: Birmingham Bradford Bristol Glasgow Portsmouth Sheffield Tyneside.
