Despite record temperatures and wildfires raging in Europe, the Government has signalled that some green policies could be watered down – and Labour is doing some soul searching around its own agenda
The Tories’ shock by-election win in Uxbridge earlier this month has fired up fierce rows within both Labour and Conservative ranks over their climate policies.
Rishi Sunak’s party clung onto Boris Johnson’s old west London seat by fewer than 500 votes, which both parties blamed on Sadiq Khan’s decision to expand London’s ultra low emission zone to improve the capital’s air quality.
Despite record temperatures and wildfires raging in Europe, the Government has signalled that some green policies could be watered down. Downing Street has said pledges were being scrutinised “in light of some of the cost of living challenges”.
Labour are also doing some soul searching over their green agenda, with Keir Starmer urging Mr Khan to “reflect” the Ulez expansion. The party has also slammed the brakes on its flagship pledge to spend £28billion-a-year on green energy projects.
