His wife, actress Heather Lowe, confirmed her husband died while the pair were holidaying in Paris. She told THR in a brief statement: "He was the sweetest prince." He was best known for his roles in a number of Western films, including Chisum, Wide Country, and The Town That Dreaded Sundown. He also starred on the Broadway stage in productions such as Look Homeward, Angel. He made his debut on the stage in 1958 a year after his first acting role, in which he had starred in an episode of The United States Steel Hour. He previously admitted it was this stint which really allowed him to learn "how to act". Andrew Prine and John Wayne in Chisum Speaking of his two-year role to Backstage, he said: "Fortunately, I did Look Homeward for two years, and what I did while playing the lead and being paid was learn how to act. "The stage manager came backstage every night with copious notes, and his job was to keep me on target. I learned how to act, really, on Broadway." His career was long-spanned and in the 1960s, he starred as Andy Guthrie for 28 episodes of Wide Country. He also had a recurring role in the final season of Dr Kildare, while featuring in action shows such as Tombstone Territory, Playhouse 90 and Gunsmoke. In 2005, he worked alongside Quentin Tarantino on a two-part Emmy-winning episode of CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Following the news of his death, fans took to social media to pay their respects and to send messages of condolence.
