Magic: The Gathering meets Pokémon with a sprinkling of pixie dust as Disney launches its first ever trading card game (TCG). But is it any good?
There are certain things that just feel like Christmas essentials. In our house that includes the double issue of the Radio Times ready to plan out our Christmas viewing and tubs of Celebrations and Miniature Heroes so everyone has their favourite chocs to munch while watching festive movies.
But at the point where we need a break from the box, we all love a new game to play and Disney has just unveiled the one industry insiders are already tipping to be the biggest draw this Christmas. American fans slept out overnight to be the first to try Disney Lorcana, while in the UK games shops opened at midnight and held special celebrations to mark the launch of the long-awaited trading card game, or TCG.
In the interests of full disclosure, when I heard Disney was launching a new deck-building card game I was pretty giddy. Both my husband and I are long-time gamers. While my days of playing TCGs slowed when we had kids, card games are among our favourite ways to spend a Saturday night, top of the list being Cryptozoic’s DC-themed deck builder and Hogwarts Battle, both of which we own an eye-watering amount of expansions for and play regularly.
Throw in some Disney magic, tonnes of new artwork and the opportunity of up to four of us to play together and early indications were that this could finally be the game we could get our seven and nine-year-old to play that we enjoyed playing too. We’ve spent years laying groundwork playing hours of classic Orchard Games and junior versions of the classics that teach turn taking but aren’t always that fun for adults, but now the time has come to take family gaming to the next level.
