But the people living there say there's more to the town than meets the eye. Louise James, 56, told LeicestershireLive: "I was born and bred here, I think the town has a lot going for it. "I don't think it's fair to write it off - there's millions being spent on the town over the next few years. There's potential for Melton." She admitted that the town centre leaves a lot to be desired, as well as traffic levels and low availability of GPs, but also pointed to the town's proximity to major hubs like Leicester, as well as its famous pork pies. Fellow resident Simon Rhodes, 59, agreed and said there are certainly worse places to live. He argued: "People live in Melton for a long time and don't leave and it clearly shows there's something good about the area. "I've seen a lot of places much worse than Melton. It's disappointing, really. "But there's still a lot of character here. There's local businesses and markets through the week which bring people to the area and add their own charm to the town centre." Melton certainly held an attraction for Janet Hughes, 67, who moved there from Bangor, Wales, almost a decade ago. She described its position in the poll as "harsh" and insisted it's "still a good place to live". It comes after the 50 worst places to live in England were revealed by a new study.
