Experts have shared that there are certain things you should never put in the washing machine if you want it to last for up to 12 years – and some will shock you
Washing machines are appliances that the majority of Brits rely on most days. They keep our clothes clean and smelling fresh – but they are costly so you’d hope they last a long time. Luckily, experts have shared ways to ensure that the appliance lasts for up to 12 years, rather than problems developing with the machine due to human errors that are easily made.
The cost of a new A-rated washing machine averages around £350, so it’s something you want to avoid buying too often, and appliance experts at RGBDirect have given their advice on things you should never put in them in order to extend its lifespan.
Experts recommended never putting your shoes in the washing machine, as it can cause “damage to both the shoes and the machine.” They said: “The tumbling action can scratch the washing machine’s drum, and the shoes themselves may lose their shape or cause imbalances, potentially leading to loud vibrations during the spin cycle.” Instead, they suggested cleaning shoes by hand using “a soft brush and mild detergent”.
They also said not to put backpacks or bags with metal parts in the washer, as it “can damage the washing machine’s drum and also harm the items inside.” The “weight of the bag may cause balance issues” too, so it’s better to spot-clean the bag, or handwash it carefully.
