Follow these easy day-by-day steps for a DIY ‘fresh from the salon’ finish that lasts
If I say ‘Salon Selectives’, I know what will spring to mind: perfectly groomed women swinging out of New York offices, hair bouncing in slow-mo. And in your head you’ll hear, ‘Like you just stepped out of a salon,’ the American accent falling on the ‘lon’ not the ‘sal’, as would have been the case had it been sung by a Brit (that would have sounded rubbish). Oh, how I coveted products that would give me always-perfect hair while simultaneously facilitating my career, like the women in those adverts.
Sadly, the only time I ever look like I’ve just stepped out of a salon is when I have. Sure, on the first day of a DIY blow-dry, my hair’s presentable. But by day two, it’s gone rogue – flatter on top, ratty at the ends. By day three, I’ve thrown in the towel and pinned it up, putting off another wash until the bitter end.
So when I saw the Lazy Girl products in Sam McKnight’s collection, I was heartened that the celebrity hairstylist and judge on E4’s The Big Blow Out (think Bake Off with backcombing) understands some of us don’t have a finger constantly poised on the dryer’s cool-shot button.
His recommendations to make your blow-dry last? If your hair gets greasy, especially with lots of products, try double shampooing. And be strategic with conditioner: if you have longer hair, gather it into a ponytail and only condition below your hand. Also, give your style foundation. I put Mr McK’s new Save The Do Blow Dry Style Starter (£26, sammcknight.com) through its paces. It gives a lifted, slightly gutsier finish, for extra mileage.
