Rishi Sunak appears to have handed Labour a reality check after the Conservatives surged ahead in a poll on the economy.
The Tories have overtaken the Opposition on defence, the economy and dealing with terrorism, according the Observer-commissioned Opinium survey.
Despite experiencing one of the shortest poll bounces ever attained by a new PM, Sunak’s arrival in Downing St has already helped restore the Conservative’s reputation as the party for fiscal management.
The news comes just days after a different poll revealed Sunak had overtaken Sir Keir Starmer in a popularity poll days after becoming PM.
While Labour still maintains a commanding lead over the Conservatives on most issues, 33% of voters said they would prefer ‘a Conservative government led by Rishi Sunak’ to manage the economy, with just 29% prefering Starmer’s Labour instead.
