Visual effects gurus call for tax breaks to take on rivals

Leading British visual-effects firms are urging the government to introduce a new tax relief system that they think could create thousands of jobs in the sector.

The bosses of Framestore and Cinesite say the UK is losing out on business because other countries have more generous schemes.

In a submission to a Treasury consultation on audio-visual tax reliefs, Neil Hatton, chief executive of the UK Screen Alliance trade body, warned the UK was “at risk of losing our position as a world leader in this area”.

Framestore chairman Sir William Sargent described the UK as a “centre for excellence” in special effects. His firm did London-based work on the Barbie movie, as well as the upcoming Wonka, starring Timothee Chalamet. But he said it
