Cash rules everything around her – when Gloria C. MacKenzie became the country’s biggest and oldest lottery winner, she didn’t expect the family feud that would take over her life and well-being, as she eventually died without any resolutions
When 84-year-old Gloria MacKenzie won the $590.5 million prize from the lottery, she was elated – thinking she’d spend her older years in the lap of luxury and be able to pass down money to her children and grandchildren.
And she did, for a while. Until it turned out that her son was allegedly “misusing” the funds she entrusted to him. The judge never did pass a final ruling before the woman died in February 2021, living in a squalid duplex.
Her after-tax haul was about $278 million. She sued her son for damages in excess of $10 million just five years later. MacKenzie alleged that her son and his investment manager each lived off the money while “poorly investing the proceeds,” according to her lawsuit filed by attorney Gregory Anderson.
