US TV show slammed for bizarre claims of Sunak backlash

Britons have fired back at Trevor Noah after he claimed to have witnessed “backlash” in the UK to Rishi Sunak becoming Prime Minister. On Tuesday, Mr Sunak, 42, became first British Asian Prime Minister in history and the youngest in more than 200 years. This historic milestone has been widely celebrated – and acknowledged as an important moment on the opposition benches. Angela Rayner, Labour’s Deputy Leader, said Mr Sunak being the first British-Asian PM is “something to be celebrated”.But a speech has emerged on Twitter from The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in the US.During a nearly three-minute long clip, Mr Noah speaks to audience members of the late-night talk show.Mr Noah said: ‘Watching this story of Rishi Sunak becoming England’s first Prime Minister of colour, of Indian descent, of all these things, and then seeing the backlash is one of the more telling things about how people view the role that they or their people have played in history.’And what I mean by this is, you hear a lot of the people saying ‘oh, they’re taking over, now the Indians are gonna take over Great Britain and what’s next?”And I always find myself going, ‘so what?’.”He added: ‘I think it’s because the quiet part that a lot of people don’t realise they’re saying is ‘we don’t want these people who were previously oppressed to get into power because then they may do to us what we did to them’.’ Trevor Noah has been criticised after he said backlash to Rishi Sunak was about racism (Image: GETTY) The Daily Show host said backlash on Sunak was over colonialism, and mentioned Tucker Carlson (Image: TWITTER)The monologue caused uproar on Twitter, with many prominent journalists shooting down Mr Noah’s claims.Sunday Times columnist Alex Massie retweeted the clip, with the response: ‘This is absolutely barking mad.’A fantasy ‘backlash’ based upon nothing more than projection and wish-fulfilment.Twitter user Graham Cowe suggested however: ‘Don’t agree that it is a ‘fantasy backlash’.’The clip is directed at the LBC caller to Sangita Myska where a Tory supporter berates Sunak as ‘he is Indian’.’You could argue about how representative a view that is, but this call got a lot of coverage in UK and abroad.’Mr Massie said in response: ‘Literally one moron on a radio phone-in.
