US reporter manhandled by Chinese official for asking about human rights

American TV producer pushed towards door after asking uncomfortable question at start of meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping

A Chinese official shoved an American journalist who tried to ask about human rights, as Joe Biden and Xi Jinping were due to meet as leaders for the first time.

The journalist, a producer for a US television network, was among a small group of press allowed to cover the start of the meeting between Mr Biden, the US president, and Mr Xi, his Chinese counterpart, which is being held on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Bali beginning on Tuesday.

When she asked Mr Biden if he would bring up human rights issues during his meeting with Mr Xi, an unidentified Chinese official pulled her backward by her backpack, causing her to lose balance, before pushing her toward the door.

Physically blocking and assaulting journalists is common practice in China, where the authorities routinely seek to punish and detain reporters whose work they dislike.
