The world is in a dire situation with climate change but humanity still has the power to tackle the problem, according to the United Nation’s climate science chief.
Professor Jim Skea, the recently elected chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said using doom-laden language could lead people to believe that the prospects for cutting emissions were hopeless.
He said: “If you use nothing but apocalyptic language, it can encourage, it can undermine a sense of agency and [lead people to] say ‘it’s hopeless, we can do nothing about it’. We can do things about it. That’s the key message I would like to get across.”
