Parents looking for a unique name for their baby boys have caused a surge in popularity for one name that has made it onto the top 100 chart for the very first time
One previously uncommon boy’s name has made it into the top 100 chart for the very first time. Parents looking for a unique name to bestow on their baby boy have caused a surge in popularity for one name that previously went under the radar, as it has now become one of the 100 most popular names for boys in the UK.
In data released last year by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the name Blake was the 74th most popular baby name for boys in England and Wales, marking a new entry on the list for the once-unusual name. However, when we covered the most popular baby names of 2023 so far earlier this year, Blake was nowhere to be seen – so it may not be as common as it seems.
The ONS data always reflects the year just gone, so when the data was released in October 2022, it covered the most popular names in England and Wales in 2021. Blake did not feature in the 2022 top 100 from BabyCentre, but the ONS data for 2022 is set to be released next week, so it may make an appearance there.
Blake isn’t the only name to have seen a rise in popularity either, as Brody, Kai, Rupert, Tobias and Nathan all found themselves bagging spots in the top 100, with Rupert and Brody making their top 100 debut. For girls, Lara, Beatrice and Sara were the new entries.
