Under-18 Mixed Championships: leaderboards change at top

With a month to go to earn a place at Quinta, we take a look at two big-hitters in the English U18 Championships

Two memorable rounds on the same day at the English Under-18 Mixed Championships in June saw new leaders emerge on the boys’ and girls’ qualifying leaderboards for this year’s Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship. Worcestershire’s Philipp Krone, 16, carded a superb five-under 67, with six birdies and an eagle, as he took the outright lead at Effingham GC.

While he has been overtaken at the top of the leaderboard, Krone looks certain to take his place as one of the 12 boys in the Algarve in October. “It would be great to test my game against other very good golfers there,” he says. “For me it’s about meeting like-minded people and seeing how my golf compares.”

Krone is a big supporter of tournament sponsor Justin Rose. “I enjoy watching him play and I recall following him around at Carnoustie with Dad at The Open in 2018.”

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Lili-Rose Hunt briefly topped Telegraph qualifying in the girls’ competition after posting three birdies in a bogey-free round of 68, as she led the tournament at Effingham after the first round.
