Ulez backlash forces Met to launch operation to target camera thieves

Installation of automatic number plate recognition cameras in expanded zone has led to more of them being stolen and vandalised

A backlash against the expansion of Ulez has forced the Metropolitan Police to launch an operation targeting vandals and camera thieves.

Operation Eremon is a new “proactive operation” which looks to target individuals it suspects have caused damage or stolen newly installed Ulez cameras.

It comes as the number of Ulez cameras being targeted increased since the start of the year as part of a protest against the mayor’s installation of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras in the expanded zone.

At the end of the month Ulez will be expanded across all 32 London boroughs, with Transport for London (TfL) needing to install 2,700 cameras to police the zone. So far around two-thirds of these cameras have been installed.
