Ukraine war latest: Russia’s battlefield losses ‘greater than entire British Army’

“Well over” 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine, according to the US’s top army general.

“Same thing probably on the Ukrainian side,” said Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Wednesday. “There has been a tremendous amount of suffering, human suffering.”

If correct, it would represent two-thirds of the Russian troops originally committed to the invasion – and more than the regular full-time personnel of the entire British Army.

But with a bigger population and compulsory military service, the Russian armed forces are much larger. Before the war, Russia had 900,000 active service personnel, including 280,000 in the army, according to an authoritative annual report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Milley also suggested that around 40,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed or wounded and anywhere between 15 million and 30 million have been displaced.
