UK weather: Bank holiday weekend could be a washout

Britons will face more travel chaos this bank holiday weekend as the start of a 24-hour rail strike and storms threaten to bring parts of the country to a halt.

About 20,000 members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at 14 train operators will walk out on Saturday, affecting events such as the Notting Hill Carnival in London and the Reading and Leeds music festivals.

Meanwhile, a new weather front could lead to thunderstorms in western England while “everywhere” in Britain has “a chance of seeing showers over the weekend”, the Met Office said.
