The UK’s air space has been shut after a ‘major failure’ in air traffic control led to flights in and out of the country being delayed amongst huge travel chaos
The UK’s air traffic control systems have experienced a “major failure” that has said to have hit “hundreds of thousands” of people flying into the UK.
According to Loganair, who first broke the news, there has been a “network-wide failure of UK air traffic control systems” as British airways confirmed it hit UK wide airspace as well. BA said: “We are working closely with NATS to understand the impact of a technical issue that is affecting UK airspace, and will keep our customers up to date with the latest information.”
The chaos has meant that countless flights supposed to be coming to the UK have been grounded, and not taken off, with technical issues ongoing since this morning. To help deal with the problem, NATS, the national air traffic controllers, based in Swanwick in Hampshire, have applied “traffic flow restrictions” limiting the number of flights operational as engineers work to find a solution.
NATS said in a statement: “We are currently experiencing a technical issue and have applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety. Engineers are working to find and the fix the fault. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
