Tyson Fury left on verge of tears after receiving “devastating” 7am phone call

Fury was relaxing with his wife Paris in Mallorca when he received the news his cousin had been stabbed to death while on a night out near Manchester

Tyson Fury has spoken out about the moment he found out his younger cousin had been stabbed to death on a night out.

Rico Burton, who was 31, was killed almost a year ago when he was stabbed in the neck during a brawl outside a bar in Altrincham. Liam O’Pray was last week sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder. And Fury, who had trained with Burton in their local boxing gym, was told of his death in a 7am phone call while on holiday in Mallorca with his wife Paris.

And speaking on his new Netflix documentary, Fury said: “Last night I was on a high after the [Oleksandr] Usyk fight [against Anthony Joshua ]. We had a great party, me and Paris were dancing. It was a great night. Then this morning I got a phone call telling me my cousin Rico has been killed. It’s like someone took the plug out of me and all the life had come out of me.

Anthony Joshua will face Robert Helenius in a 12-round main event at The O2 in London this Saturday August 12, shown exclusively live worldwide on DAZN – with fans now able to view as part of their regular subscription. DAZN is the home of all the major fights from the boxing world and Saturday’s sold-out event will now be available to watch worldwide on the service.
