 Two female hikers were found dead in Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park as the American southwest continues to endure a record-shattering heat wave. Nevada is currently under an extreme heat advisory as a 'heat dome' engulfs the entire region, bringing daily triple-digit temperatures. Officials and fellow hikers noticed the two women leave for a hike in the park on Saturday morning. It is unclear what time the victims began their hike, but the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) by 9.00am, according to National Weather Service data. Their fellow hikers became concerned after they failed to return in the afternoon as temperatures in the park began approaching 114 degrees Fahrenheit (45.5 degrees Celsius). State Park Police found the first hiker collapsed on a trail around 2.48pm, with no sign of her partner. Investigators then called for assistance from a search-and-rescue team from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The second hiker was eventually found in a canyon, authorities said. The two hikers have not yet been identified. An investigation into their deaths is ongoing. Valley of Fire is a 46,000 acre park located in Overton, Nevada – about 50 miles outside of Las Vegas. The park is renowned for its Mojave Desert landscapes, stunning cliff faces, and ancient petroglyphs. The deaths in Nevada came only four days after a 71-year-old hiker was found dead in California's Death Valley, another state park in the Mojave Desert often considered to be the hottest place on earth. Death Valley recorded a record high temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit in 1913 – the highest ever accurately recorded on Earth.
