‘Whaur’s yer Côte d’Azur the noo?’ we used to say in the Highlands when the sun poked through the clouds on the odd summer day. The joke has died. After an unrelenting August, September temperatures have soared, and Scotland is heading for the hottest three-month period on record. We do not need to hear news of the devastating bush fires in Canada, the destruction of homes and loss of life on Maui in Hawaii, the accelerated shrinking of the Arctic ice cap, to know we are in trouble.
