The Grand Old Party (GOP) expected to see a ‘red wave’ following the vote on Tuesday, but with key issues such as abortion taking centre stage, young voters turned out in their droves to vote, which worked against the Republicans in some areas. While Ron DeSantis triumphed in Florida, the Republican candidates backed by Donald Trump fared less well across the US.Many Republicans across the country have started to blame their Former President for the failings of the candidates who lost to their opponents. Many blame Trump’s dangerous rhetoric surrounding ‘rigged’ elections and ‘voter fraud’ which has been an ongoing issue since he refused to concede to Biden in 2020.For months there has been speculation about when Trump would announce his Presidential bid for 2024 which ramped up ahead of the midterms as he teased of a big announcement next week.Author and commentator Douglas Murray wrote in The Sun: ‘Had there been a clean sweep of Republican victories, Donald J Trump would have taken the credit. Just asking?’Defiant Trump then addressed the elephant in the room of the midterm results: ‘From my personal standpoint it was a very big victory – 219 wins and 16 losses in the general – Who has ever done better than that?’
