 A former US Marine who was previously released in a prisoner swap with Russia was injured while fighting in Ukraine. The State Department confirmed at a press briefing on Tuesday that marine veteran Trevor Reed was injured after fighting in Ukraine. 'We are aware that Trevor Reed was injured,' Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters, adding that the former marine was 'not engaged in any activities on behalf of the US government.' 'Mr Reed has been transported to Germany and he is receiving medical care,' Patel added. His travel out of Ukraine was facilitated by an unnamed non-government organization. The Messenger previously reported he suffered from shrapnel wounds after stepping on a landmine, citing anonymous Defense Department sources. The injury reportedly happened about two weeks ago. Reed was first hospitalized in Kyiv before being transported out of the country by the NGO. Reed, 30, was originally arrested and charged with assault of a police officer after he was detained in Russia in 2019. He was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison. Both the Reed family and US government criticized the charges and sentencing. 'I cannot even say 'miscarriage of justice' because clearly 'justice' was not even considered,' Sullivan said. 'This was theater of the absurd.' Reed was released and returned to the US in April 2022 after the government negotiated a prisoner swap deal with Russia.
