 A small town in Wiltshire today played host to a gathering of up to 30 town criers from the UK, Bermuda, Nova Scotia and Australia. They all competed in the Calne Town Crier Competition to the theme of 'Cry Me a River' in honour of the river Marden that flows through Calne. The event has been hosted by Calne town crier Mark Wylie, who won the inaugural town crier competition in Chard in June. The first 'home' cry started at 10.30am and the second cry was at 2pm. 'We do this to promote our town and to spend time with friends,' Mr Wylie told BBC Radio Wiltshire. 'If you think of town crying as a sport, this is one of the majors. Mr Wylie had some valuable advice for the contestants and told them to 'relax, enjoy yourself and breathe deeply'. 'It's like any other sport or profession where you use your voice, you've got to look after it,' he added. While the town criers enjoyed their gathering, a gathering of the dog kind happened in the Scottish Highlands this week. Hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners gathered at the dog breed's ancestral home. The event included a night-time procession, which was held on Tuesday, as well as talks, a workshop and demonstrations.
