Tory MP voices fury as ministers refuse to abandon sending children to Rwanda

Senior Tory MP Caroline Nokes called on the Home Office to listen to concerns rather than ‘bunker down and defend policies and practices that are found to be inadequate’

A senior Tory MP has hit out after the Government refused to rule out detaining children and sending them to Rwanda.

Caroline Nokes also voiced her alarm about the “dangerous practice” of moving pregnant women and new mothers without their consent or that of a doctor. Ms Nokes, who chairs the Women and Equalities Committee, called on the Home Office to act rather than “bunker down and defend policies and practices that are found to be inadequate”.

The remarks came after the Government rejected a call by the cross-party committee to abandon its plans to send children to the African nation. It also refused to stop moving pregnant women between asylum centres.

Ms Nokes said: “Today we hear the Government remains unwilling to rule out entirely plans to detain child asylum seekers or their removal to Rwanda. It is deeply disappointing that the Government has not listened to the concerns raised in our report on the risks of harm to children in the asylum system.
