Michael Gove unveils plans to massively expand university town’s urban footprint, but local MP says water shortages make it impractical
A row has broken out within the Tory party over government plans to massively expand Cambridge’s urban footprint, as the local MP said he would fight the “nonsense” proposals.
Michael Gove, the Levelling-Up Secretary, has vowed to push forward with the proposals, which are a central part of the Government’s new housing strategy. He has promised that more homes will be built in city centres and fewer in rural areas.
However, Anthony Browne, the Conservative MP for South Cambridgeshire, said he would do everything he could to block “mass housebuilding” in the university town.
Under the government plans, more homes will be built to the east of London, as well as in cities like Manchester and Leeds, and in the centre of Cambridge. Rules will also be relaxed to allow more extensions and loft conversions.
