Top universities in crisis as lecturer strikes add to students’ woes

Top universities are “in crisis” because of the threat of more strikes by lecturers and further legal action from students who are frustrated by three years of disruption to their degrees.

On Monday, August 14, the University and College Union (UCU) will hold an emergency meeting for a new ballot for strike action. Walkouts would start in the autumn amid an increasingly angry dispute that began in 2018.

The UCU, which wants a pay rise that matches the retail prices index plus two percentage points – the equivalent of 12.7 per cent – rejected an offer by the Universities & Colleges Employers Association of a rise of between 5 per cent and 8 per cent.

The union’s members are already engaged in a marking boycott
