An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as hyperthermia due to being left in the car. Both parents tested positive for marijuana and alcohol, while the father also tested positive for meth. They have been arrested and face charges. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd referred to the situation as a case of "pure negligence" during a news conference. He mentioned that the car was parked outside without any shade or protection, and the temperatures were in the 70s overnight but began to heat up in the morning. The sheriff's office explained how the tragic incident unfolded after they arrived at home that night: "Joel brought stuff inside their home, and when he went back outside, he saw all four doors to the Hyundai Elantra closed, and assumed Jazmine had gotten the toddler out. "An autopsy determined that the victim's cause of death is hyperthermia due to being left in a car, and the manner of death is homicide." The heat index in the area was 105 by 11am, suggesting that the temperature inside the car could have been between 130 and 170 degrees (54C - 76C degrees).
