Shitterton, a hamlet in Dorset, often makes the list of rudest place names in the UK, and as such often have people travelling just to see what it's like and take a picture of its sign. But in 2010, the hamlet's residents grew so fed up of their sign being stolen they put a stone version up instead. Villager Ian Ventham told the BBC at the time: "Every two or three years somebody comes along and nicks our sign because, clearly, Shitterton is amusing. We think it was kids who would like to have it stuck on the wall in a den somewhere. "I don't think it was malicious, they just did it for fun, but it was exasperating for us. We would get a nice new shiny sign from the council and five minutes later, it was gone." He said that Purbeck District Council would just continue putting up new signs, for them to be stolen also. One year there were three thefts of the sign, which were wooden and easily removable by someone who wanted a souvenir, so residents came up with a plan. He said: "Purbeck District Council, not being over-endowed with money at the moment, would merely have replaced it with yet another sign. That would have been stolen so we got together as residents for a whip-round and bought this wonderful piece of Purbeck stone which, at a tonne-and-a-half, is going to be slightly more difficult to take away." The hamlet's 100 or so residents came together to donate £20 each towards the sign, which cost £680. The council also gave them £70 towards the sign, which is what it would have cost them to replace the stolen wone. Shitterton is located on){kind=link}
