Sir, Rishi Sunak’s endorsement of many of the reforms proposed by The Times Education Commission (News, Oct 27) is to be welcomed. As a retired professor I have been alarmed at the way in which universities have prioritised quantity over quality. Maybe 200,000 to 300,000 students are doing courses that they will not use in their careers.
If they were to transfer to do apprenticeships shared with courses that would have three advantages. First, it would release a lot of badly needed workers into the economy. Second, the young people would not be burdened with student debt but would be earning. Third, most of these young people would remain at home thus releasing a large number of student residences to the general housing
