Those with no experience of racism should think before lecturing Trevor Noah

The irony in Trevor Noah being told what is or isn’t racist by others who haven’t and will never experience it would be hilarious if it wasn’t so infuriating.

Born and raised in South Africa, the late Nelson Mandela was still in prison when Trevor was a newborn – and would be for another six years – and it was even illegal for his parents – a Black mother and white father – to be in a romantic relationship.

He now lives in America where, just two years ago, we watched a Black man being suffocated to death by the knee of a white police officer in broad daylight.

Between growing up in apartheid-era South Africa, and just generally being well-travelled, it’s not a stretch to say that Trevor – a mixed race 38-year-old man – is pretty wise to the way of the world particularly with matters of race.

It’s not clear just how much time Trevor’s spent in the UK but it doesn’t take a genius to know that, while we may have our first British-Indian Prime Minister, there’s likely a large number of people who feel Rishi Sunak shouldn’t be in the position he’s in; some because they don’t agree with his policies but also some based on the colour of his skin.
