Since Rishi Sunak has been appointed poll numbers for the Tories has improved (Image: Getty)Indeed, if the poll numbers settle on a soft Labour lead with a decent Lib Dem percentage, that is perhaps even more dangerous for the Tories than a Labour landslide margin. If Labour won by a landslide, despite many members backing a move away from first-past-the-post and towards proportional representation, the party would likely have less of an incentive to ditch the current voting system. Not so if the Labour Party found it needed to reach some deal with the Lib Dems, who almost certainly would demand a referendum on changing the voting system as a condition for any deal.Bad news for the Tories. A move towards proportional representation would almost guarantee the Tories never win a majority again, but instead would have to work with new and existing parties on the right.Meanwhile, most Brits now back a move away from first-past-the-post so disgusted are they by the lack of choice in the current system, making the chances of a referendum succeeding all the more likely. While Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out even an informal post-election deal with the Lib Dems, it seems hard to believe Labour really would lose the chance to form a government simply because it was not willing to work with the Lib Dems.As the Tory civil war rumbles on this week meanwhile, will some current Conservative MPs read the room and jump ship to a party like Reform UK?After all, many of them are staring at the possibility of defeat at the next general election, while others are set to retire anyway. For those MPs, would it not be better to continue their political career with some degree of principle? This would likely inspire many voters who would see former Conservative politicians leading by example. After all, it is hard to see right now who will actually back the Tories next time around. Certainly not flag, faith, and family voters, long ago let down by the party.Certainly not voters who want a tough stance of security, law and order, borders, and sound public finances. As for having got Brexit done, more like having got Brexit botched, and the country has lost count of the number of U-turns and contradictions. If the best argument for the Tories is they are fractionally better than Labour then really the party has outlived its purpose, merely blocking the path for more competent political forces to rise in its place. The Conservatives have already exiled many of their brightest and best to the backbenches and Lords. Perhaps now it is time, finally, for those people to take a stand.Surely, they can see the writing on the wall. It will after all take a coalition of like-minded and principled people to unite for the common good to bring about the type of change many talk about but few seem to do much for.The UK is not working, and the Tories have had over a decade to fix the mistakes of the Labour era. It is time not only for the country to admit this but for many Tory MPs and peers to accept this and do something about it.
