Dorgelesse Nguessan had never been politically-active before attending her first protest in 2020.
But – concerned about the government of her home country, Cameroon – she joined an opposition-led peaceful protest in the capital, Douala.
Security forces fired rubber bullets, teargas and water cannons to disperse the crowd and then arrested hundreds of people, including Dorgelesse.
She was charged with ‘insurrection, assembly, meetings and public demonstrations’ and tried by a military court, which found her guilty and sentenced her to five years in prison.
