‘There’s no place in politics for Tory Lee Anderson but Labour can’t keep ignoring him’

Keir Mudie says he is worried as the Labour Party appears to be quiet after the latest comment made by Tory MP Lee Anderson as staffers think his views are too extreme to engage with

I’m loath to devote prime real estate in a newspaper to talk about MP Lee Anderson but sometimes there is no option.

He came up before, by refusing to watch England at the Euros because players were making anti-racism protests before the game. Odd choice of boycott, I thought. Now he’s back – not that he ever went away. He’s risen through the Tory Party ranks at some speed, benefiting from just being there. This week’s outburst (the kindest description I can think of) was: asylum seekers who don’t like living on the prison boat off Portland “should f*** off back to France”.

Seriously? Where do you even start? Particularly after Friday’s news about legionella in the water supply and Saturday’s reports about six dead in the Channel. God knows what we’ll hear today. Just tackle the backlog, Lee. Stop treating people like this.

I warned a little while ago that an imploding Conservative Party would start lashing out in all sorts of directions, increasingly nasty, increasingly dangerous. For their deputy chairman to be using that sort of language is horrific. What’s worse is he’s backed by colleagues.
