The Times view on science ties with the EU: New Horizon

In the credit and debit reckoning that has followed Brexit an undoubted entry in red has been the sundering of Britain’s research ties with universities and other research institutions in the European Union. Prior to this country’s departure from the EU it was a leading player in the Horizon Europe programme, binding together research teams from across the continent in everything from artificial intelligence to life science. Such was the excellence of British research that this country commonly supplied the leadership for transnational projects and attracted more funding from this gigantic funding pot – about £500 million per year more – than it put in. But this happy state of affairs ended with Brexit and Britain’s ejection from Horizon. A mooted domestic alternative called Pioneer
